This is an easy-to-read book about Hazel Dickens' life and songs. It was great getting her perspective on the different songs she wrote....what the story was behind a song, what inspired her, etc.

The only bad part about this book is that because it was written as a biography and Hazel was so modest, it doesn't go into more detail on the depth of what she did to help the coal miners, how hard she had to work to succeed as a woman in the music industry, how much of a role model she's been for other women artists, what an inspiration she was for the creation of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco (the largest festival of its kind; even the mayor of SF dedicated a day to her and personally came on stage to give her a certificate of recognition), etc.

We still miss her dearly, but it's comforting to know her songs are timeless and we'll never forget her!

Working Girl Blues The Life and Music of Hazel Dickens Music in American Life Hazel Dickens Bill C Malone 9780252075490 Books Reviews

Hazel Dickens was my great aunt. She was my grandfathers sister. She was a great musician and a good woman. I can remember going to my grandparents house to visit when she would also come and her and my grandfather would sit for hours and play. She was a wonderful musician that many people had a great amount of respect for!
This brief work is a helpful start, and readers should understand that it is a popular level work rather than the serious analysis and historical work that Hazel's life, tradition, and music really deserve. But until that appears, this is a good start. In fact, such short works done quickly, while memories are fresh, can be VERY helpful for later, more serious, academic works. There is a short biography, followed by the lyrics of many of Hazel's songs with brief comments from Hazel herself. The book reads like an extended series of conversations with Hazel Dickens herself. I enjoyed reading it, but was left wanting more background, analysis, and comparisons with other musicians similar to her, either historical or contemporary. I was especially interested in learning about Mountain Gospel music, but this work is very minimal on this subject. But all in all - a Good start.
After attending a bluegrass festival, I realized that although I knew nothing about Hazel Dickens, other performers at the festival had great respect for her. After reading this book, I knew why. She started life very poor, shy, and very self-conscious about her lack of formal education. She did, however, live in a family that valued country and hill music. Through hard work, a little luck and taking advantage of any help offered, she became a musician in the Appalachian hill style, singing songs she wrote about current injustices as well as old standards. She gained the courage to speak out for oppressed coal miners, the homeless, child laborers, women in abusive relationships, and other downtrodden people. As one of the first women in the previously male-dominated field of bluegrass, she became a feminist before she knew what the word meant. She has worked hard and lived frugally by choice. This book is especially valuable because it contains lyrics to all the songs Hazel has written along with notes about why she wrote them.
THIS is a FANTASTIC SHORT BOOK, WITH BIO, by Hazel Dickens and the noted country music scholar, Bill Malone, with the SONGS ANNOTATED BY Hazel, with the time, mood, meaning which moved her, and which brought her to writing, and singing. There are also more than a dozen historic, PHOTOS, of Dickens with diverse individuals, from Eddie Stubbs of the Grand Ole Opry with Mac Wiseman at a Nashville music event to photos from records with Alice Gerrard her singing partner in the first significant women's bluegrass duo, so influential in shaping later artists like the JUDDS, as well as photos from diverse cultural, and political events, (Walterr Mondale photo, ex) As Hazel and Alice were key performers in Anne Romaine and Bernice Johnson Reagon's Southern Folk Festival Tours and events, this portion of her career is covered with sensitivity but understatement and this book should be in the library of any series student of country music, 'Americana' as it's come to be known in Nashville, currently, or as a force in the movements of the last century, including an historic poster of a concert sponsored by the Highlander Folk Center, where Reagon and the deceased writer Guy Carawan did so much over so many years via their 'We Shall Overcome Fund' to lift up music as a central force for progressive social change in the U.S. The scholarly yet accessible volume of U. of Illinois' series Music in American Life is a key volume in comprehending the possibility of amelioration of cross racial, ethnic, gender and culture conflicts in the US. get it, you'll love it!!! Shipped promptly, no issues. Clean with some markings, but this was described and there was no issue.
Hazel has been a pioneer in the bluegrass world opening doors for women and this is good history of her life and her song writing. I highly recommend it!!

The biography in this book was less than 25% of the book's length. It was really just a long article. Lots of photographs. The bulk of the book was given over to Dickens' descriptions of the origins of her songs. A good book - but not the biography that I was expecting to read.
