Jonathan Redmond's story is one for which I've been waiting and for the most part, it was worth the wait. He has been an interesting secondary character in the previous Pennyroyal Green books and has always seemed to be the most lighthearted of the Redmond siblings as he skimmed along playing darts, gambling, doing some legitimate investing, womanizing and generally living the life of a wealthy, attractive young man with no particular set of obligations. It is this aimlessness at the center of his existence that is the most challenged by the story's heroine, Thomasina (Tommy) de Ballesteros. Needless to say attraction turns to love and Ms. Long's trademark HEA unfolds as usual. There were parts of this book, especially early on that are laugh-out-loud funny. That ability to make the reader laugh is a rare talent and I applauded Ms. Long for it. Character development, good dialog and likable characters have kept me coming back to read more and more of her work. The spirited, often funny back-and-forth between Jonathan and Tommy was often fun to read.
There were parts of Jonathan's story that touched on some universal themes that can at times, come into conflict with one another: the sense of belonging that comes from family bumped up against the need to separate from parental influence to stand on one's own two feet. The scene when Jonathan stands up to his dad, Isaiah Redmond is wonderful. Tommy's longing for family, identify and place was especially heartbreaking and a believable catalyst for her child-saving activities.
Bottom line: this is a very good, if somewhat predictable read and it was clear to me at least very early on what Jonathan would do to win his lady love. That said, the chemistry is palpable and the love story satisfying.

I have to say, It Happened One Midnight Surprised me. The surprise wasn't in that I loved it; I love the entire Pennyroyal Green series so much that it is on my absolute favorites list. This one surprised me in that the hero, youngest (and seemingly carefree Redmond) Jonathan has turned out to be maybe the most formidable and powerful man in the entire series. And that includes Isaiah Redmond and Jacob Eversea.
It Happened One Midnight was fun, and so funny! Jonathan and Violet Redmond (now Lady Ardmay) made me laugh every time the two shared page. Not to mention the banter he and Tommy shared, the type of banter formed by true liking, friendship, and chemistry and unbearable sexual tension.
It was also a... tender story, once you really dig in. Both Jonathan and Thomasina were bold and brave, but in the way only true love can expose, were unbelievably fragile and (often unwillingly) open with only one another. Jonathan's life as the youngest and disappointing son in his father's eyes, and Tommy's life as an orphaned and illegitimate daughter of a Spanish courtesan and an English Duke who was sold into child slavery, led both to be hard on the outside, but soft and vulnerable only with each other.
Which leads me into another reason I found It Happened One Midnight that it takes on the issue of child labor in historical England. This was a topic I knew a bit about from history classes, but reading it from the point of a former child laborer (albeit fictional) a woman who's dedicated her adult life to furtively freeing children from that life, was enlightening. And I love how rapidly and fiercely Jonathan was roused to join the fight.
Hmm. Seems like I have a lot to say about the different ways I loved It Happened One Midnight, but I haven't said a lot about the actual romance. Jonathan and Thomasina were another remarkable couple who totally won my heart. Which, is completely true to form for the Pennyroyal Green series.
Julie Anne Long seems to have my number, or rather, I am perfectly suited for her work. It Happened One Midnight was another winner in what has turned out to be one of my top three favorite series ever.
I had to add a review because this book merits high praise. Admittedly, I didn't have high expectations based on the blurb.. It sounded too cliche. Jonathan's character didn't seem very interesting in previous books. Thomasina sounded like a genre stock character.
However, I could not have been more wrong.
Both H & h are multi-faceted and have hidden depths. Jonathan is a great combination of sardonic, ambitious and brave while Tommy is incredibly courageous and tender. Neither are slutty/rake/virgins, both are honest. They both get that they are beautiful but don't take it too seriously. There are a lot of other interesting characters but they do not take away from the H & h.
There are no misunderstandings, martyred desperation or stupidity just to move the story along. Instead, both characters face a series of financial obstacles with wit, grace, creativity and hard work. The happy ending really IS a happy ending because the characters are rewarded for their courage, effort and love. All this not to mention beautiful writing and great humor.
All elements are done well here; characters, plot & style. I realize this isn't classic literature but this is art and is very much appreciated!
For those familiar with the books The Redmond family has changed and I can't wait to see what it will be like when Lyon (the eldest sibling gone missing) comes home.
